Song of the Day: "Uncle Frank" by Drive-By Truckers

Welcome to the song of the day, where we feature a single track, whether its brand new or older than us, overlooked or overplayed, our favorite or no one’s favorite; as long as its interesting, it can be the song of the day.

Happy Pi Day! In honor of math or something, we’ve got a song from an album about pizza, which is a circle. Pizza Deliverance by the Drive-By Truckers was released in 1999. It was the band’s second album, and there would be another in 2000 before their breakthrough double LP, Southern Rock Opera. “Uncle Frank” is one of the enduring songs from this album, still played by the band at shows. It was written by the band’s second songwriter, Mike Cooley, and tells the story of an illiterate man’s suicide.

This is an electric version of the song recorded in 2005 and included on The Fine Print (A Collection of Oddities and Rarities) from 2009.
