Song of the Day: "Eve of Destruction" by Barry McGuire

Welcome to the song of the day, where we feature a single track, whether its brand new or older than us, overlooked or overplayed, our favorite or no one’s favorite; as long as its interesting, it can be the song of the day.

The big news this weekend was from the 800+ protest marches around the world begging for common sense gun legislation, so today’s song of the day brings us back to one of the original protest songs.

“Eve of Destruction” was written by PF “Flip” Sloan in 1964 and first recorded by Barry McGuire in 1965. It’s an anti-war song with references to Selma, Alabama, JFK’s assassination, Vietnam, violence, hatred, and war. Predictably, a lot of the song is just as relevant in today’s culture as it was then:

Handful of Senators don’t pass legislation,
And marches alone can’t bring integration,
When human respect is disintegratin’,
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin’,
And you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
Ah, you don’t believe we’re on the eve of destruction.
