Here’s some of the weekend’s music news:
- The Oscars were last night, and all five songs nominated for Best Original Song were performed. It was “Remember Me” from Coco that came out on top. The song was performed by Miguel, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Natalia Lafoucade at the awards ceremony, and Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Anthony Gonzalez, and Ana Ofelia Murguía. It was written by the husband and wife duo behind the music for Frozen, Kristin Lopez-Anderson and Robert Lopez.
- Next month, John Prine will be releasing his first album of actual new material since 2005’s Fair & Square, which itself was 10 years removed from an album of mostly new material. The Tree of Forgiveness will be out April 13. Here’s the first song, “Knocking on Your Screen Door.”
- Singer-songwriter Josh Ritter posted this quick tribute to Joan Baez on the release of her new album. In addition to the two songs Josh wrote for the album, there are songs written by Tom Waits, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Joe Henry.
- This weekend we heard from Boston band Lake Street Dive for the first time in just over two years, when they released their third proper full-length, Side Pony. We’ve got a lead single, “Good Kisser”, and a fourth album announcement: Free Yourself Up will be available May 4.
- And finally, another performance from the Oscars ceremony; Eddie Vedder covered Tom Petty’s “Room at the Top” for the in memorium section of the show.
