Gaslight Anthem returns, American anthems, and more music news

  • The Gaslight Anthem played their first show since going on hiatus following their Get Hurt tour. The show and upcoming dates are in support of the 10th anniversary re-release of their breakthrough album, The ’59 Sound. Last night’s show was at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, and based on this setlist, the band played the album in its entirety with a few selections from their other four discs before and after:

  • Lenny Kravitz has announced a new album, Raise Vibration, out September 7. Here’s the first single from the New York by LA singer’s 11th, “Low”:

  • NPR is starting a cool series collecting different American anthems. “Whether a song originated in America is less important than the role it plays in American culture (so expect to see a few from beyond our borders). From ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’ to ‘Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,’ ‘Dixie’ to ‘Born This Way,’ we want you to think about what makes an anthem and for whom these compositions can speak.” I chose “America” by Paul Simon for my submission.

  • The Outlaws and Armadillos Concert was held this weekend to celebrate the opening of a Country Music Hall of Fame exhibit on ’70s country music. The show was co-produced by Shooter Jennings and Dave Cobb, with a lineup that included Jason Isbell, Amanda Shires, Chris Shiflett, Charlie Worsham, Ashley Monroe, and a bunch more. Rolling Stone Country has more, including pictures.
