Welcome to the song of the day, where we feature a single track, whether its brand new or older than us, overlooked or overplayed, our favorite or no one’s favorite; as long as its interesting, it can be the song of the day.
St. Patrick’s Day was Saturday, so here’s a song by one of the most Irish of Irish bands. The Pogues were formed in 1982 by Shane MacGowan. They released seven albums between then and 1996, including two after MacGowan’s departure in 1990. If I Should Fall From Grace is often considered their best album, thanks to the presence of their most popular hit, the Christmas staple “Fairytale of New York,” but I’m very partial to the album this song appears on, Rum Sodomy & The Lash, originally because it was produced by Elvis Costello.
“A Pair of Brown Eyes” is the story of a drunk man in a bar, with references to Johnny Cash and Irish singers Ray Lynam and Philomena Begly, and was released on March 18, 1985 as the first single from the band’s second album.
