Song of the Day: "Bat Out of Hell" by Meat Loaf

Welcome to the song of the day, where we feature a single track, whether its brand new or older than us, overlooked or overplayed, our favorite or no one’s favorite; as long as its interesting, it can be the song of the day.

On this day in 1966, Roy Orbison crashed his motorcycle in the UK. Rock history is littered with stars who were in motorcycle crashes: Billy Idol, Steven Tyler, Mark Knopfler, Orbison, Bob Dylan, Duane Allman and so on. In tribute to that rock star rite of passage, today’s song is the ultimate motorcycle crash song.

“Bat Out Of Hell” is the first song on the album by the same name, released in 1977 as Meat Loaf’s second proper album but first collaboration with Jim Steinman. Touring on Bat Out Of Hell, Meat Loaf basically lost his voice and couldn’t record the planned follow-up when it came time. Meat and Steinman have since collaborated on two Bat sequels, in 1993 and 2006.
