My 14th birthday was on April 9, 2005, which according to this tweet, means that “Candy Shop” by 50 Cent ft. Olivia defines my life. The song was the second single from 50’s second album, The Massacre, which lost the Best Rap Album Grammy award to Kanye’s Late Registration. Olivia was a singer who released one self-titled album in 2001 but has since released singles with Missy Elliott and Sean Kingston and was featured in the first three seasons of Love and Hip Hop: New York.
If you were wondering, “Candy Shop” was the number one song in America, but other chart toppers around different genres and countries on that date include “Since U Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson (Mainstream Top 40), “Be Yourself” by Audioslave (Alternative Rock), “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson (Adult Contemporary), “The One and Only” by Chesney Hawkes (UK), “Rain/Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Anthony Callea (Australia), and “All Because of You” by U2 (Canada).
To bring even more person history into this song, I was actually all set to interview 50 Cent a few years ago, but it never happened. I was working for a local newspaper and 50 was touring liquor stores around the country promoting Effen Vodka, which he was a shareholder with. Less than a week before his scheduled appearance at our local store, he posted a video heckling an airport employee with autism because he assumed he was on drugs, and the liquor store owner canceled the appearance. I didn’t get to interview 50 Cent, but it ended up being a cooler story to cover a local man with integrity who stood by his principles rather than take the opportunity to have an international superstar visit his little store.
