Philly punk band Beach Slang is in a weird limbo right now. They released their debut, The Things We Do To Find People Who Feel Like Us, in 2015, and came right back the following year with A Loud Bash of Teenage Feelings. But on tour in 2016, the band broke up on stage in the middle of a Salt Lake City show. Later, drummer JP Flexnor was kicked out of the band. Then, after guitarist Ruben Gallego was accused of sexual assault and subsequently kicked out of the band, leaving singer and lead vocalist James Alex as the only remaining original member.
It’s unclear if Alex will continue to release music under the name Beach Slang, but this year he released an album of quieter acoustic version of Beach Slang songs under the name Quiet Slang. The album, Everything Matters But No One Is Listening, came out last week, following a similar EP with a reworked song from each album, a cover of The Replacements’ “Androgynous,” and a cover of Big Star’s “Thirteen.”
“Dirty Cigarettes” was a song that first appeared on the band’s debut EP, Cheap Thrills on a Dead End Street and was released with a music video for the Quiet Slang version of the song.
