Song of the Day: "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" by Elton John and George Michael

Welcome to the song of the day, where we feature a single track, whether its brand new or older than us, overlooked or overplayed, our favorite or no one’s favorite; as long as its interesting, it can be the song of the day.

I didn’t know this version of this song existed, even though it had more commercial success than the original. In 1991, George Michael recorded the Elton John song “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me” with John himself at Wembley Arena in London, and released it as a single. On this day in 1992, Michael announced that his royalties from the sale would be donated to various British and American charities for children, AIDS, and education.

The video, shot at a live performance in Chicago, is pretty cool if only for the moment when Michael unveils John to the crowd and they go wild. I’ve been at concerts before when a special surprise guest shows up, but can’t imagine seeing someone as famous and as amazing as Elton John walking out of the shadows.

Sidenote: Although Michael died two years ago, his dog, Abby, just passed a few days ago.
