Welcome to the song of the day, where we feature a single track, whether its brand new or older than us, overlooked or overplayed, our favorite or no one’s favorite; as long as its interesting, it can be the song of the day.
Throughout his career in Philadelphia, Sixers center Joel Embiid has been vocal about the injustice of rapper Meek Mill’s incarceration. Plenty of other athletes have also been outspoken about the situation, and this week, Sixers owner Michael Rubin and Patriots owner Robert Kraft visited Meek in prison.
(If you need a primer on who Meek is, why he’s in prison, and why people are upset about it, here’s an article by CNN’s AJ Willingham.)
Anyway, the NBA season just ended and Philly’s basketball club is coming into the postseason hot. After years of dismal seasons, the 76ers won 52 games this year, good for the 3 seed in the East, just three games behind the Boston Celtics, and with the second best point differential in the conference. Embiid was an all-star starter, Ben Simmons is a surefire Rookie of the Year, and the team set the record for most consecutive wins to end a season with 16. They begin their first playoff series since the 2011-2012 lockout-shortened season, when they lost in the second round to the Celtics. Although I don’t usually listen to much rap, in honor of the red hot Philadelphia 76ers, our song of the day is the opening song and title track of Meek Mill’s 2012 debut LP, Dreams and Nightmares.
