Mike Doughty was the lead singer of the band Soul Coughing from 1992 through around 2000, when he began pursuing a solo career with the self-release of lo-fi recordings such as Skittish and Rockity Roll. ATO Records would eventually sign Doughty and re-release those albums together, as well as Doughty’s next three full-length LPs, Haughty Melodic, Golden Delicious, and Sad Man, Happy Man. These were his first solo music that was accompanied by a full band, with the first two produced by songwriter extraordinaire and former Semisonic frontman, Dan Wilson. “Fort Hood” was the first track off Golden Delicious, released in 2008. The song’s chorus is reminiscent of the song “Aquarius” from the musical Hair.
