Welcome to the song of the day, where we feature a single track, whether its brand new or older than us, overlooked or overplayed, our favorite or no one’s favorite; as long as its interesting, it can be the song of the day.
It’s 4/20, and there’s plenty of songs to choose from that have weed references, but for some reason, the first one that popped into my head probably isn’t even a weed reference, but a song about someone named Mary Jane. This is “Shallow Days,” a b-side Counting Crows song recorded during the sessions for their first album, August and Everything After, and later included as a bonus track with anniversary editions of the album.
August and Everything After came out in 1993 and “Shallow Days” first appeared in 2007. The song, like the rest of the album, was written by the band and produced by David Bryson.
