The first single from David Bowie’s 1969 self-titled album eventually took over as the album’s title upon its reissue in 1972. “Space Oddity” was recorded in June and released on this day in 1969 and served as the opening track of Bowie’s breakthrough follow-up to his self-titled debut in 1967. The US Apollo 11 mission launched five days later. The song’s original B-side was “Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud,” but was accompanied by “The Man Who Sold the World” upon reissue in 1973 in the US and “Changes” and “Velvet Goldmine” in 1975 in the UK.
