For Indiana indie rock trio Houndmouth, Golden Age is a step in a different direction. The band’s third album is their first with new label Reprise after two with Rough Trade; it’s their first since the departure of vocalist, songwriter, keyboardist, founding member Katie Toupin; and it’s their first in a new sonic direction.
Where the band’s first two albums, 2013’s From The Hills Below The City and 2015’s Little Neon Limelight, were more comfortably in the country/southern rock category, Golden Age is a little more electric and a little more eccentric; the influence from producer Jonathon Rado, frontman for the California band Foxygen, can be felt throughout the album’s 10 songs.
The album’s first single, “This Party,” was met with some fan backlash due to the completely different sound, which the band responded to with this self-deprecating hype video.
Houndmouth recently played New York, Asbury Park, and Philadelphia prior to the album’s release and currently do not have any nearby dates scheduled following the release, though you can check their tour dates here.
